Make Your State Inspection Easy!

While Virginia state inspections are first come, first serve, we encourage you to book an appointment with us so we know you’re coming. This allows us to better prepare for your visit and minimize your wait time. Please note, however, that appointments do not guarantee a specific time slot, as state inspections are handled in the order vehicles arrive.

How to Prepare for Your VA State Inspection

Before heading to Craftsman Auto Care for your VA State Inspection, use this checklist to visually assess the status of your vehicle!

  1. Lights: Visually inspect all of the lights on your vehicle, including headlights, exterior lights, turn signals, and license plate lights. Make sure all are working and keep and eye on the condensation build-up inside the lights.
  2. Mirrors and Horn: Check your mirrors for any cracks or chops, and that the horn is loud with no muffled sounds.
  3. Dashboard Warning Lights: Any lights can indicate numerous issues with your car. Get any illuminated lights checked out before your inspection to avoid failing.
  4. Tire Tread Depth: A common reason why vehicles fail their Virginia inspection is low tread depth. Check you tread at home with the penny test!
  5. Listen for Unusual Noises: Hearing any strange rattles, clinks, roaring or squeals? Bring your vehicle in for a checkup before your inspection if anything seems out of the ordinary.
  6. Windshield and Glass: Check your windshield and windows for any cracks or improperly placed stickers. Make sure the windshield wipers are working properly, and that the front and rear defrosters are in good shape.

What Happens if Your Vehicle Fails?

If your vehicle does not pass the Virginia State Inspection, don’t worry. At Craftsman Auto Care, we’ll provide you with a detailed list of the reasons why your car failed. You’ll then have the opportunity to repair the necessary issues and have the vehicle re-inspected.

Virginia law allows 15 days for you to make repairs and return your vehicle for a free re-inspection at the same facility. If the repairs take longer than 15 days or if you bring the vehicle to another facility, you will need to pay for the inspection again.
